Martyn Allen, Technical Director at Electrical Safety First, commented: “The evidence suggests that substandard and dangerous products are sadly all too common place on online marketplaces.
As it has become increasingly clear that marketplaces are failing to tackle this issue effectively, the Government now needs to take necessary steps to force them to do so.
Electrical Safety First has led the way on calls for better regulation of online sales to ensure consumers are protected from ruthless third party sellers, looking to shift unsafe products.
Our previous investigations have discovered copycat phone chargers that risk exploding, fire risk hairdryers and travel adapters that pose a significant risk of electric shock. Enough is enough and the Government now needs to consider real legislation with sharp teeth in order to combat this serious problem.”
