Amongst the twinkling fairy lights and Christmas cheer, it’s crucial to keep your loved ones safe. This year, we’ve teamed up with the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) to help parents and carers spot potential hazards in the home and shop safely for gifts online.
You can find more seasonal advice on CAPT's website.
Here’s our top tips for a truly magical Christmas:
Shop smart, give safely
- Buy presents, such as toys and other electrical products, from reputable retailers. Be cautious of third-party sellers on online marketplaces as some products may not meet proper safety standards.
- Check out our safe shopping guide to help you steer clear of counterfeit goods when shopping online.
Deck the halls...safely
- Real Christmas trees can catch fire a lot quicker than a fire-retardant artificial one so if you have a real tree, keep it well watered. They can absorb up to one litre of water per day – don’t let it dry out.
- As you brighten up your space with lights and outdoor decorations, make sure you avoid overloading your sockets and extension leads.
- Christmas lights brighten up the home but can be an electrical safety risk so switch them off when you're not there to enjoy them and overnight.
Cooking up a festive feast
- Stay safe in the kitchen this Christmas. Turn the hob off when cooking’s done and keep it clear of flammable items.
- Remember to test your smoke alarms – there should be a minimum of one on each floor.
